Overview
Featuring tasteful wood paneling and high quality construction, Yamaha's S2100 physical characteristics suggest the brand were looking to build a true high end hifi component.
A dive into the topology really cements this initial impression, the S2100 has been designed with a completely symmetrical construction: the rotating loader mechanism is in the centre, the digital power supply and circuit board are on the left side, and the analogue power supply and circuit board are on the right. A toroidal power supply has been used to manage the analogue circuit. The sensitive disc-mechanism is protected from the digital and analogue circuit boards by a 5mm (1/4”) thick aluminium divider.
S2100 features the same drive mechanism as in the Yamaha flagship model CD-S3000, and is capable of both red-book CD, and SACD, decoding.
In addition to onboard disc playback, the unit features coaxial, optical and USB inputs, so can be used in conjunction with a digital transport to act as a pure DAC. ESS Technology's popular ES9016 DAC chip is at play for both CD reading and digital inputs.
