Overview
While on paper this device is generally a 1080i HDMI output DVD player, the construction and feature set show particular attention has been paid to maximise audio quality.
With 'Pure Direct' mode activated, the noise floor of the analogue outputs is significantly reduced, making the most of the onboard Burr Brown DAC chip. However, as is often the case with audio-focused CD and DVD players, the digital output (coaxial RCA and optical) is the star - connected digitally to a well-performing DAC, the sound is remarkable considering the age and DVD capabilities of the unit.
Those with an SACD, or HDCD, collection in addition to red-book discs are covered, and even 5.1 audio DVDs can be read and decoded, thanks to the 5.1 channel analogue output section.
The unit would make a fine addition to a hifi rig that is primarily focused on streaming or vinyl playback, especially if you can connect to a dedicated DAC or streamer offering digital inputs. Time to dust off that disc collection!
