Edge-mounted system with external magnetic circuit for impressive performance

The headphones use an edge-mounted system that includes an external magnetic circuit for unprecedentedly rich sound reproduction from a small driver. In addition to this magnetic circuit, which increases the driver’s output, the diaphragm is fixed with a thin stainless-steel plate to allow for the maximum driving area. This enables powerful sounds and impressive volume that outperforms other similarly sized drivers.

Ultra-small voice coil for high-definition sound

The floating voice coil above the diaphragm reduces tension in the wiring and eliminates unnecessary stress during movement, allowing the sound to be truly accurate to the music signal.

Building on the highly praised noise-cancelling performance of the previous model, the new ATH-TWX9MK2 offers superior noise-cancelling with upgraded noise-detection MEMS microphones and improved driver performance. Each earbud features two advanced noise-detection MEMS microphones,* delivering a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) critical for noise-cancelling performance. These microphones capture ambient noise in greater detail and send it to a high-precision noise-cancelling processor. The high-sensitivity drivers then generate precise anti-noise sound waves that effectively cancel even the faintest background sounds.

*The two microphones are used for feedforward (housing side) and feedback (conduit side).

Personalized noise-cancelling system for ideal quietness

Take your noise-cancelling experience to the next level with a personalized system that offers superior effectiveness for any ear shape, even shapes that differ on left and right sides. Enjoy an ideal quiet space whenever you use the headphones.

When worn in both ears, the headphones output detected sounds while the built-in microphones capture the listening environment characteristics for each individual. This allows the headphones to determine the best noise-cancelling performance for any user.

Deep-UV light sterilization of bacteria and viruses

Simple charging case-based deep-UV^*1 sterilization after every use

Every time the headphones are placed in the charging case, the deep-UV LED sterilization system eliminates bacteria and viruses from headphone surfaces.

The deep-UV^*1 LED sterilization system eliminates bacteria and viruses on the surface of the headphones in about 70 seconds inside the case. Mirrors^*2 are used to distribute the light evenly for increased effectiveness^*3.

*1 The system uses ultraviolet rays with short wavelengths to sterilize and eliminate bacteria and viruses effectively.

*2 For safety purposes, the system is enabled only while the lid of the charging case is closed. The UV rays do not cause deterioration or fading of the headphones in any way.

*3 The system is more than 99% effective against E. coli and bacteriophage viruses, and more than 90% effective against Staphylococcus aureus, but it is not effective against all bacteria and viruses. The effectiveness against the novel coronavirus has not been verified.

Comfortable eartips with a hybrid structure of hard and soft silicone

The headphone’s eartips are soft and pliable for a gentle fit. Meanwhile, the parts of the shaft that transmit sound are stiff to reduce adverse impacts on sound quality and noise-cancelling. The new, hybrid structure utilizes the varying hardness of the two silicone materials to create a comfortable fit with superior sound performance.

The tactile umbrella fits naturally in the ear canal for enhanced airtightness, an essential factor for the noise-cancelling function. The high-strength shaft also minimizes sound transmission loss to bring detailed audio directly to the eardrum.

Choose from 12 different eartip combinations with three different styles for each size. Experience a unique fit that seems almost custom designed to suit your ears with a wide selection of eartip depths and widths. This function improves audio in hear-through mode, even for everyday conversations. As the microphone captures environmental sounds, the noise-cancelling function reduces the muffled sound experienced when talking with others while your ears are covered (such as by headphones). This means that not only are environmental sounds reproduced naturally, but conversations are also clearer with less muffling of your own voice even when wearing the headphones.

Quick Hear-Through for Clear Transmission of Surrounding Sounds

Easy capture of environmental sounds

Quick hear-through for instant volume adjustment and playback of voices

The quick hear-through function is perfect for tuning in or out of your surroundings by allowing you to hear announcements or listen to those around you. This single-action function instantly lowers playback volume* and captures ambient sounds while enhancing the vocal bandwidth.

*Use the Connect app to select Decrease Volume/Mute for music playback while hear-through is enabled.

This function can be set to either Natural or Strong. When set to Natural, noise cancellation is used to reduce low- and high-frequency noises so users can focus on voices. When set to Strong, the full range of external sounds are captured, not just voices, giving users a better awareness of their surroundings. Both settings can be useful for different situations or preferences.

Beamforming microphone clearly captures voices, even in noisy environments

Small, high-performance MEMS (micro-electromechanical system) microphones are strategically placed in two locations on each headphone. These two microphones make it possible to use beamforming technology* for clear transmission of your voice even in noisy environments.

*This technology is directional toward the speaker’s mouth to accurately capture the speaker’s voice for enhanced call quality.

Sidetone function* for more natural-sounding conversations

Wearing headphones makes hearing your own voice difficult. The sidetone function allows you to hear your own voice during calls for more natural-sounding conversations, almost as if you weren’t wearing headphones at all. This can prevent you from talking louder than needed—a common problem during calls.

*Use the Connect app to adjust the voice capture level or to turn the function on/off at any time.

Improved call quality with ambience control

Just as with music playback, the noise-cancelling and hear-through functions can be turned on or off (ambience control) even during calls to suit any environment and situation.

The noise-cancelling function is ideal for creating a quiet environment when you need to concentrate on voices in a call, such as during important meetings or personal conversations.

The hear-through function creates a relaxing call environment that allows you to hear family and friends as though you were conversing face to face instead of through headphones.

Each function can be selected or turned off as needed to suit the call environment. Neither the noise-cancelling nor the hear-through function places an excessive strain on the battery during use.

The charging case—an essential component of any truly wireless headphones—was designed not only to look good but also to be highly useful. The smooth, streamlined shape includes elegant curves that are both comfortable and easy to hold while also providing a secure grip. The charging case can slide easily into a pocket or a bag for superior portability. Wide finger areas on both the front and side make it easier to open the lid on the go. The headphones themselves are also easy to insert and remove, for a smooth experience from start to finish.

Wide variety of LED actions for indicating charging case status

The charging case includes five LEDs on the front that can display detailed status information. Check the current status of the headphones or charging case whenever the case is opened or closed, including remaining headphone or case battery level information, charging status during wired/wireless charging, and deep-UV LED sterilization system status. In addition to providing useful information, the LED actions and colors are also fun to watch.

The charging case is compatible with wireless chargers (sold separately) for easy place-and-go charging. When the battery gets low, simply place the charging case on a wireless charger, or charge it using the included USB Type-C™️ cable.

Enjoy up to 6 hours of continuous playback* even with noise-cancelling turned on, and up to 18.5 hours with the charging case. Turn noise-cancelling off to get up to 6.5 hours of use from each headphone or 20 hours of use with the charging case.

The headphones boast an IPX4*-equivalent JIS/IEC protection rating (headphones only). The splashproof design means you never have to worry about keeping them dry in sudden rain showers or when exercising.

*An IPX4-equivalent rating signifies the product will not be adversely affected by water splashing from any direction. This rating does not ensure protection in hot and humid locations such as baths and showers. The product is not completely waterproof.

Touch sensor operation can be affected by the season, weather, or amount of moisture or dirt on your fingers. This function—configurable using the Connect app—helps improve operation by adjusting the sensitivity of the sensor.

Left/right balance adjustment

You can adjust the balance of the volume emitted from the left and right sides of the headphones.

Adjustable volume steps

Easily fine-tune the volume adjustment level in the Connect app to get the perfect listening comfort for your ears. Use the app to change the adjustment steps from 16 (default) to 32 or 64 steps for more fine-grained control.
