DVC Collection - IMF Super Compact II - Restored by David E. Cox

Overview

IMF Super Compact II

IMF is a British loudspeaker brand which found considerable success in the 1970’s and 1980’s championing the design of Transmission Line enclosures.

Initially IMF sub-contracted cabinet manufacturing and purchased drive units from KEF, but then bought a cabinet factory near Oxford and formed a joint partnership with Elac (TDL) to make the drive units, effectively bringing control of entire production in-house.

The Super Compact II, produced from 1979 to 1985 was an improvement and refinement of the Super Compact, a bookshelf speaker that found recognition due to its superb sound, in particular, bass that belied its diminutive size.

Similarly, the Super Compact II is a 3-way bass-reflex design with a short midrange transmission line and is 46cm tall, 28cm wide and 30cm deep and 10.5kg. The aperiodic foam in the large front vent acts as resistive loading, damping unwanted ‘cone weave’ sound waves.

The bass unit is an 8” Dalesford 8/22 SP1014 Mark II woofer with bextrene cone and a free air resonance of 22Hz, the midrange is a 4" IMF/Elac 4EM/101 and the tweeter is a French Audax HD 12 X 8 D 25 SP. They are all mounted in a mirrored layout.

In the original brochure, IMF writes, “The subjective performance should be homogeneous in such a manner that the total integrated output provides an aural illusion of a far larger sound source.”

The Super Compact II behaves like an audio tardis; the sound is so large and the bass so deep (30Hz) it is hard to reconcile with its bookshelf footprint, clearly leveraging every inch of its 25L volume.

David removed all traces of the original varnish and finished them in rosewood tint Kunos hard oil and covered the grills in British Racing Green premium fabric.

The capacitors on the crossover were upgraded to Shizuki and ME brand film capacitors.

The foam surround on the midrange units were replaced.
