Overview
The Audio Research No.38 features a unique design philosophy tailored for contemporary audio systems without a phono stage. It serves as an optimal preamp for high-output source components that require no gain, essentially functioning as an attenuator and buffer between the source and power amplifier. The volume and gain, controlled by software, provides up to 18dB gain when needed. The MDAC, a digital-to-analog converter, governs precise attenuation through a resistor network. The preamp maintains a fully balanced topology from input to output, overcoming challenges with traditional potentiometers through the use of dual MDACs for impeccable volume-control tracking. It converts single-ended signals to balanced at the input, emphasizing common-mode rejection. The power supply and digital electronics are strategically isolated to prevent interference.
